Building products where they are sold has long been a philosophy of Honda. To achieve this, the company builds manufacturing facilities in countries where it has established a market. This accomplishes two things. First, the production facilities provide jobs to associates and domestic suppliers and helps build communities. Further, localized production allows Honda to better understand customer needs in the market, and then design and build products that exceed the customers' expectations in that region.
This basic philosophy led to the decision to establish Honda of America Mfg. in the late 1970s. Starting with motorcycles, and later automobiles, Honda quickly became integrated within many local communities throughout the State of Ohio. Honda continues to strengthen its commitment to produce products locally by expanding its manufacturing facilities in North America to Indiana, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Presently about 80% of the vehicles Honda sells in the United States are produced in North America.
